Hongqi S Concept Show Car Debuts at 2026 Beijing Auto Show

Hongqi unveils the S Concept, a sleek sports coupe at the Beijing auto show, marking a shift from executive sedans to driver-focused emotion. Sales drop prompts new direction.

Hongqi used the Beijing auto show to reveal one of its most unconventional projects in recent years: the S Concept show car, a sleek coupe that marks a sharp departure from the brand’s long-standing image of formal executive sedans.

The S Concept is a low-slung sports coupe with an elongated silhouette, a smooth roofline, and an aggressive front end. Narrow LED headlights, massive air intakes, and the signature red stripe along the center of the body give it a lively, almost emotional interpretation of Hongqi's design language.

At the event, journalists from 32CARS noted that Hongqi is signaling a shift in philosophy from austere prestige to driver-focused emotion. This move is telling: in the first quarter of 2026, Hongqi's sales in China fell 25.3% to around 75,000 vehicles—so the brand is clearly looking to tap new segments and audiences.

The rear of the car follows trends seen in modern electric sports cars: a full-width LED strip, an active spoiler, and a pronounced diffuser. In profile, the S Concept looks thoroughly aerodynamic, with big wheels, minimal overhangs, and a low stance.

Inside, the concept is all-digital: there’s a large central display, an unconventional dashboard architecture, and a heavy focus on premium materials. Decorative elements with space-themed visual effects also catch the eye.

Journalists highlighted that Hongqi is pushing into new driver-interface technologies, with an emphasis on graphics and multimedia capabilities.

For now, the S Concept is just a show car, but its significance goes well beyond the model itself. Hongqi, a brand dating back to 1958, traditionally built cars for the political elite. Today it's trying to become a global premium contender. It's already running multiple lines—conventional combustion cars, hybrids, battery EVs, and now sports concepts—alongside its upmarket Golden Sunflower range, which starts at $140,000.
