At the Beijing auto show, journalists from 32CARS spotted the new Volkswagen ID.Aura T6, an electric crossover built on the new CEA architecture. The model was designed from the ground up as an EV and features a lidar unit as well as the CoreDrive intelligent driver assistance system, developed in collaboration with Horizon Robotics.

The ID.Aura T6 is one of the key new models for the Chinese market in 2026. So far, the company has only revealed the exterior design, but it's clear this is a large family crossover with an elongated body and a dynamic silhouette. Raked pillars, a long roofline, and wide wheel arches create a modern electric SUV look.

Up front, narrow headlights are connected by an LED light bar with an illuminated logo. Additional lighting elements are integrated into the bumper. Out back, a full-width LED light bar has become a signature feature of new Volkswagen models.

As a 32CARS journalist found out, the ID.Aura T6 is built on the new CEA architecture, which is dedicated exclusively to electric vehicles. This means a complete abandonment of internal combustion engines and a focus on a digital platform with deep software integration.

A key feature is the roof-mounted lidar and the CoreDrive system developed with Horizon Robotics. It provides advanced driver assistance functions, including highway and urban driving. Detailed powertrain specs have not been disclosed, but given the class, it could compete in the powerful electric crossover segment.

The ID.Aura T6 is aimed at the Chinese market, where it competes with models like the BYD Tang, Nio ES6, and Li Auto L-series. Volkswagen is betting on a combination of hardware solutions (lidar) and a software platform to catch up with local manufacturers in autonomous driving.

Availability outside China has not been confirmed, but interest in EVs and cars from China could open the door through parallel imports.
