Volvo ES90 and EX90 will ship without lidar in 2026
Supplier issues force Volvo to ship 2026 ES90 and EX90 without roof lidar; some 2025 EX90s too. No retrofit, safety intact. All trims get a €1,500 price cut.
Electric Volvo ES90 and EX90 models from the 2026 model year will temporarily ship without lidar modules. The automaker explained that supplier issues have halted installation of the sensor on new vehicles. Cars built after the 46th week of 2025 will roll off the line without the roof-mounted lidar bump.
Volvo also notes that a small number of 2025 EX90s may be delivered without lidar, with customers informed separately. Retrofitting is not possible due to the system’s complexity. Core active safety features continue to function as intended, while lidar mainly provided an edge in nighttime conditions — a detail that makes the move feel like a pragmatic pause rather than a step back.
As compensation, Volvo is reducing the price of all ES90 and EX90 trims by 1,500 euros. Updated price lists are already available. With these changes, buyers comparing electric sedans and SUVs can factor in the revised equipment and the new pricing when making their choice.
