Nissan Frontier Pro hybrid pickup could re-enter European market
Nissan considers bringing the Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid pickup to Europe, featuring 400+ hp and 135 km electric range, competing with Ford Ranger PHEV.
Nissan is considering bringing pickups back to the European market, where the brand has been absent since 2022 after discontinuing the Navara. At the core of this new strategy is the Frontier Pro, a plug-in hybrid model developed in collaboration with Dongfeng.
The Nissan Frontier Pro combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with an electric motor, delivering over 400 horsepower and up to 800 Nm of torque. This setup makes the model competitive not only for everyday use but also for demanding tasks like towing and hauling cargo. With an electric-only range of up to 135 km according to the Chinese test cycle, it stands out as one of the longest-range PHEV pickups available.
For now, the project is under evaluation. Entering the market will require costly certification, including crash tests and adaptations to meet European standards, which could exceed 10 million euros. If the model gets the green light, it will directly compete with the Ford Ranger PHEV, effectively doubling the hybrid pickup segment in Europe.
The Frontier Pro is part of Nissan's broader push to re-enter the European market. After a period of stagnation, the brand is focusing on electric vehicles and models produced in China. By 2028, Nissan's lineup in Europe could grow from 6 to 9 models, with plans to reach annual sales of 500,000 vehicles by 2030.
Nissan's return to the pickup segment represents more than just expanding its model range. It's an attempt to adapt to new market demands, with hybrid technology and Chinese platforms becoming key tools in the fight for European buyers.
