Lexus GX550h hybrid SUV: trademark suggests new model
Lexus may launch a hybrid GX SUV, as the GX550h trademark is registered in the US. It could use powertrains from the LX700h or Toyota LandCruiser.
Lexus may introduce a hybrid version of its GX SUV to the market, as indicated by the registration of the GX550h trademark in the United States. If this model goes on sale, it would become the latest SUV from the brand to receive a hybrid powertrain.
Currently, the GX lineup features six versions with a gasoline-powered 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 engine producing 260 kW of power and 650 Nm of torque. Unlike other models in the brand's portfolio, the GX remains the only Lexus SUV without a hybrid variant.
The future GX550h is expected to possibly adopt the powertrain from the Lexus LX700h—a hybrid with a 3.5-liter V6 and a combined output of 341 kW and 790 Nm. An alternative could be the system from the Toyota LandCruiser 250, which combines a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine with two electric motors for a total power of 240 kW and 630 Nm.
Production of the GX and its sibling, the Toyota Prado, takes place in Japan. While the Prado has already incorporated hybrid technology in some markets, the GX continues to stick with a traditional gasoline format.
The shift toward hybrids is driven by increasing competition, including from models like the Denza B5 with its hybrid setup. Against this backdrop, the GX could join the ranks of new vehicles focused on electrification and improved fuel efficiency. Official confirmation for the launch of the GX550h in all markets is still pending, but the trademark registration suggests preparations are underway for its release.
