Porsche launches Shanghai R&D center for China-focused innovation

Discover how Porsche's new Shanghai R&D center unites Porsche Engineering China and Porsche Digital China, accelerating China-only AI infotainment for 2026.

Porsche has taken a strategic step toward China by opening a new research and development center in Shanghai. The site brings the technical division, Porsche Engineering China, and Porsche Digital China under one roof, forming a unified innovation hub with more than 300 engineers.

At the opening ceremony, Oliver Blume, chairman of the executive board of Porsche AG, said that China is now setting the pace for the future of mobility, blending electrification, digitalization, and a new level of luxury. The new center is meant to help the brand react faster to local innovations and build solutions tailored to Chinese customers — a pragmatic way to keep pace with a market that moves quickly.

The first tangible result is a next-generation infotainment system designed exclusively for China. Set to debut in 2026, it will feature an AI assistant, three-dimensional controls, and seamless integration with the country’s digital services — a clear signal that software experience is becoming the core battleground for buyers.

Porsche has been expanding its R&D footprint in China since 2014, starting with an engineering office in Shanghai. The new center will serve not only as an extension of Germany’s Weissach, but also as an independent innovation hub where German precision meets the speed and energy of Chinese tech.

Shifting the innovation center of gravity to China looks like the right call. This is where not just the biggest markets take shape, but also the technology trends that will define what a premium car feels like in the years ahead.
