BMW M350 prototype revealed as future M340i replacement
BMW's M350 prototype with 417 hp B58 engine previews the next-gen 3 Series. Production starts in 2026, blending power and comfort in the sports sedan segment.
BMW is preparing the next generation of the 3 Series (G50), and a BMW M350 version has already surfaced online—the future replacement for the M340i. The prototype appeared briefly in an official video about the electric BMW i3 (NA0), where it was shown for just a few seconds.
This version features a gasoline-powered inline-six B58 engine. Preliminary data suggests the 3.0-liter unit will produce around 417 horsepower, a noticeable increase over the current M340i. This move strengthens BMW's position in the sports sedan segment, where buyers typically seek the best balance of power and comfort.
The BMW M350 prototype sports the distinctive M Performance styling, including quad exhaust pipes. While camouflage currently hides the design, the model is expected to share styling cues with the new i3, with a longer front end to accommodate the combustion engine.
Notably, the full-fledged next-generation BMW M3 won't arrive until 2028, making the M350 the key variant at the start of sales. Production of the 3 Series G50 is scheduled to begin in late 2026.
Overall, this signals that BMW continues to develop classic gasoline models even amid electrification. For the 2026 auto market, it shows that demand for powerful sedans persists, and new vehicles will still blend traditional engines with modern technology.
