Subaru boxer engine converted to inline layout in Siberia experiment
See how Garage 54 in Siberia transformed a Subaru EJ20 boxer engine into an inline configuration. This experimental project explores engine design possibilities.
In Siberia, Russia, the Garage 54 team conducted an unusual experiment with a Subaru engine. The bloggers decided to abandon the signature boxer layout and convert the motor into a conventional inline configuration.
The project used two 2.0-liter EJ20 engines. One was partially disassembled, while the other served as a donor for creating an elongated block.
In practice, the engineers essentially cut the boxer engine apart and re-welded it, aligning the cylinders in a single row. Some components, including the cylinder heads, were left unchanged.
This was purely an experimental build with no practical application. The main goal was to demonstrate the possibilities of the design and test whether a boxer engine could physically be converted into an inline one.
The work proved extremely challenging, requiring precise part fitting, layout modifications, and extensive welding.
Ultimately, the project showed that even complex designs can be radically altered. However, in the real automotive industry, such experiments remain more about entertainment than technological advancement.
