Kia exploring compact EV1 for affordable electric city driving
Kia may launch a compact electric car, possibly called EV1, targeting Europe with a price under €20,000. It could compete with Renault Twingo E-Tech and Volkswagen ID.1.
Kia is exploring the possibility of launching a compact electric vehicle, which might unofficially be called the EV1. This model is aimed at the European market and the affordable city car segment.
The newcomer is expected to compete with models like the Renault Twingo E-Tech and the upcoming Volkswagen ID.1. It could also replace the current Kia Picanto, which has been on the market since 2017 and has undergone several updates.
The car could be built on the K1 platform used for the Hyundai Inster. This platform suggests a length of around 3.8 meters, electric motors with 97 or 115 horsepower, and batteries with capacities of 42 or 49 kWh. The expected range is between 327 and 370 kilometers.
Price will be a key factor. Kia may aim to keep the cost below €20,000, which would require simplifying equipment and localizing production in Europe. Meanwhile, the design might differ from its cousin, the Hyundai Inster—instead of a compact SUV, Kia could opt for a classic city hatchback to avoid internal competition.
The project has not been officially confirmed yet, but it reflects the growing interest in the city electric car segment, where manufacturers are betting on affordability and practicality.
