New Mercedes-AMG G63 convertible to launch in 2028
Mercedes-AMG is launching a G63 convertible in 2028, featuring a Landaulet-style body and a 577-hp V8 hybrid engine. Learn about this new G-Class model.
Mercedes-AMG is preparing to launch a new version of the legendary G-Class—a convertible based on the G63. According to preliminary information, the model will go on sale in 2028, with production starting a year earlier at the plant in Graz, Austria, where G-Class SUVs are traditionally assembled.
A New Format for the Iconic G-Class
Judging by early images and leaks, the newcomer will feature an unusual body with Landaulet characteristics—an elongated roof that smoothly transitions to the rear of the vehicle. Unlike previous G-Class convertibles, the new version's design appears more substantial and thoughtfully engineered for second-row passenger comfort.
The addition of full rear doors is also expected, making the model significantly more practical than its predecessors. At the same time, the classic "boxy" silhouette of the G-Class will be retained, ensuring its recognizability and signature ruggedness remain intact.
Proven AMG Engineering
Under the hood, the familiar 4.0-liter V8 with twin turbocharging and a mild-hybrid system is likely to remain. Its output will be around 577 horsepower, matching the current G63 and delivering confident performance even for such a heavy SUV.
The all-wheel-drive system and off-road capabilities will also remain at a high level. Despite the open-top body, Mercedes has no intention of sacrificing the G-Class's key qualities, including traction and stability on challenging surfaces.
Production and Positioning
Assembly will take place at the Magna Steyr plant in Graz, which has been responsible for G-Class production for many years. This confirms that the newcomer will be a full-fledged part of the lineup, not an experimental limited-series project.
The arrival of the G63 convertible reflects a trend toward creating image-focused SUV versions aimed at premium audiences. Such a vehicle will be about more than just off-roading—it will also emphasize status, emotion, and rarity, which is particularly important in the luxury segment.
