Chery advances EV leadership with high-density solid-state batteries

Chery introduces solid-state Rhino S batteries with 400 Wh/kg density, targeting 1,500 km range and 600 Wh/kg. Learn about upcoming models and hybrid solutions.

Chery is making a serious bid for leadership in the electric vehicle segment with the introduction of a new generation of batteries boasting record-breaking energy density. As electric vehicle development progresses toward 2026, the company has announced a technology capable of delivering a driving range exceeding 1,500 km.

This centers on the solid-state Rhino S battery series, which has already achieved a density of 400 Wh/kg. Looking ahead, Chery plans to increase this figure to 600 Wh/kg. The first vehicle to feature a fully solid-state battery will be the Exeed ES8, whose road testing is scheduled to conclude within the year.

In parallel, the brand is advancing its hybrid solutions. This very year, the Exeed EX7 crossover will receive a battery with a semi-solid architecture. Meanwhile, Chery's current battery packs can deliver up to 500 km of range after just 8 minutes of charging and are rated for up to 5,000 charge cycles.

Nevertheless, questions remain. The manufacturer has yet to disclose the charging speed for its solid-state batteries, a key performance metric. The market already features solutions like the BYD Blade battery, which demonstrates extremely high charging rates, indicating that competition in this area will be intense.

Overall, the technology appears promising. However, for buyers in the coming years, it's important not to delay a vehicle purchase decision while waiting for the "perfect" battery. In practice, this means solid-state batteries remain a long-term strategy rather than an immediate solution, though they are likely to define the rankings of the best cars in the next decade.
