Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Air Down Mode enhances off-road performance

Learn about the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2's Air Down Mode, a feature that lowers tire pressure for better traction on sand, rocks, and mud. Discover specs, engine details, and pricing.

Chevrolet has introduced a special Air Down Mode feature in the Colorado ZR2 pickup, designed to make navigating tough off-road terrain easier. This system allows drivers to reduce tire pressure in a controlled manner before tackling sand, rocks, or mud.

Lowering the pressure increases the tire's contact patch with the ground. This helps the tire adapt better to uneven surfaces, boosting traction and improving performance on soft or rocky terrain. In the Colorado ZR2, this process can be managed directly through the multimedia system: the driver sets the desired pressure, and the vehicle then adjusts its electronic systems for optimal low-pressure driving. After off-roading, tire pressure must be manually restored to the standard level.

The Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is the off-road variant of the midsize pickup. It measures about 5.4 meters in length and 1.94 meters in width. Its suspension is raised by roughly 8 cm compared to standard versions, with ground clearance reaching nearly 27 cm. The truck features all-wheel drive and locking differentials at both the front and rear.

This pickup comes with 17-inch wheels fitted with Goodyear Wrangler Territory Mud-Terrain off-road tires sized at 33 inches, along with aluminum underbody protection and reinforced rocker panels. Inside, it boasts an 11-inch digital instrument cluster and an 11.3-inch multimedia screen integrated with Google services.

Under the hood, the Colorado ZR2 packs a turbocharged 2.7-liter TurboMax engine producing 314 horsepower and 583 Nm of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The pickup can tow up to 2,720 kg. As a vehicle built for serious off-roading and active use, the Colorado ZR2 falls into the category of hardcore off-roaders. In Europe, its price through parallel imports starts at around €88,000.
