First drive: next-gen Honda Civic Hybrid prototype with updated hybrid system
We test the next-gen Honda Civic Hybrid prototype: lighter 2.0-liter Atkinson hybrid with parallel motors, new rear-seat battery and a crisper S+ mode.
Honda is gearing up to launch the next-generation Civic Hybrid, and journalists have already sampled a prototype at the Tochigi proving ground in Japan. The car wore heavy camouflage, yet it was clear this was the forthcoming Civic with a thoroughly reworked hybrid setup.
The headline change is an updated hybrid system pairing a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle engine with a new electric-drive architecture. The traction and generator motors now sit in parallel, making the package more compact and efficient. A newly designed battery resides beneath the rear seat and will be used across several models, including the Accord and CR-V. According to engineers, the powertrain’s mass is down by 80–90 kg.
The cabin has evolved too: a 15-inch center display now anchors the dash, and the traditional gear selector has been replaced by a column-mounted lever.
From behind the wheel, the prototype shows confident performance and sharp response, particularly in S+ Shift mode, which mimics a conventional automatic with paddle shifters. The powertrain’s sound is cleaner and more pleasant—closer to a Civic Si—a welcome change.
