Illuminated car logos banned in Italy due to safety laws
Learn why Italy bans illuminated car logos and radiator grilles under highway code articles 72 and 153, affecting brands like Audi and BMW.
In Italy, cars cannot be equipped with illuminated logos, even if this option is available in other countries. This restriction stems from local legislation governing the use of light elements on vehicles.
According to Articles 72 and 153 of the Italian Highway Code, only light sources with officially approved functions are permitted on vehicles. These include items like low-beam headlights, daytime running lights, and side marker lights. Any decorative light elements not falling into these categories cannot be approved for standard vehicle configurations. This explains why the same car model can have different versions for different markets.
Meanwhile, such design elements are becoming increasingly popular. Many manufacturers use glowing emblems and illuminated radiator grilles as part of their brand identity. These features can be seen on models from Audi, BMW, Volkswagen, and other brands, particularly in electric vehicles.
However, in Italy, vehicle homologation considers not just design but also safety. The law requires that every light source on the road have a clear purpose and not mislead other road users. Despite advancements in lighting design, such restrictions continue to influence vehicle appearance.
