Kia PV7 electric van with modular body technology for 2027

Kia expands electric commercial vehicles with PV7 in 2027, featuring modular rear body for van, minibus, camper, or pickup configurations. Learn about its European strategy and sales goals.

Kia is expanding its range of electric commercial vehicles with the PV series. Following the successful launch of the PV5, the company is preparing a larger PV7 model for 2027, with a flagship PV9 planned for 2029.

Erhan Eren, the new director for PBV in Europe, is leading this initiative. With nearly two decades of experience in commercial transport and electric vehicle technology, his task is to strengthen Kia's position in the LCV segment across the European market.

The key technical feature of the upcoming PV7 could be its modular rear body section. Kia is exploring the possibility of quickly switching configurations—from a van to a minibus, camper, or pickup. A magnetic and locking element system is under consideration, though homologation across different countries remains a significant challenge.

This makes the PV7 the first platform specifically designed for such technology, as the smaller PV5 proved too compact for this purpose.

Both models will target the European and South Korean markets. By 2030, Kia aims to boost PV series sales to 250,000 units.

Kia's focus on modularity could become a strategic advantage in the electric LCV segment. If regulators approve the interchangeable body technology, the manufacturer could offer businesses a flexible tool with lower ownership costs.

For car-sharing, delivery services, and the tourism sector, this might mean reducing fleet sizes and increasing vehicle utilization. A single chassis could perform multiple functions throughout its lifecycle.
