Land Rover Defender Sport: compact electric SUV launch details

Land Rover's new Defender Sport is its first fully electric model, built on the EMA platform. Learn about its off-road capabilities, size, and launch plans.

Land Rover is gearing up to launch the new Defender Sport, the brand's most compact and first fully electric model. Development is already at an advanced stage, with test prototypes spotted on roads in the UK.

The newcomer will be built on the EMA electric platform and will be smaller than the current Defender 90. It is expected to measure just over 4.5 meters in length.

Despite the switch to electric power, brand leadership emphasizes that key Defender qualities will be retained. The model will feature all-wheel drive, likely via two electric motors, and aims to lead its segment in off-road capability.

The use of floor-mounted batteries imposes some constraints on suspension articulation and geometry, but JLR states that maintaining the signature off-road prowess remains a priority. This detail matters because it highlights the engineering focus on balancing new technology with core brand strengths.

The Defender Sport will be the first all-new product since Defender was transformed into a standalone brand under the House of Brands strategy. Looking ahead, the Defender lineup could expand, potentially including smaller models for Europe and larger versions for the U.S. market.
