BMW X5 next generation: new design, engines, and technology

Learn about the upcoming BMW X5, set for 2026-2027 with Neue Klasse-inspired design, updated powertrains including hybrid and electric, and Panoramic iDrive system.

BMW is preparing a new generation of the X5, expected to debut in late 2026 or early 2027. The model will retain the CLAR platform in an updated form and feature design inspired by the Neue Klasse.

Judging by spy photos, the SUV will get a more compact vertical grille and narrower lighting. The body proportions will become less upright, with more raked pillars and pronounced side surfaces. The taillights will feature horizontal graphics without a continuous light bar.

Inside, the cabin is expected to feature the Panoramic iDrive system: a narrow display at the base of the windshield for driving data and a central screen oriented toward the driver. The interface will support over-the-air updates.

The engine lineup will include gasoline and diesel versions like the 40 and 40d, a plug-in hybrid 50e, and M60 variants. An updated 4.4-liter V8 with over 500 horsepower is possible, along with an inline-six with electric assistance. A fully electric iX5 will appear, with a hydrogen fuel cell version planned for the future. This means the flagship 2026 SUV from BMW will offer multiple powertrain types right from the start.
