Android Auto navigation not showing on head-up displays

Android Auto users report missing turn-by-turn directions on HUDs after an update. Google is working on a fix for this safety concern affecting BMW, Audi, and other brands.

Android Auto users are facing a new issue: after a recent update, navigation has stopped displaying on head-up displays (HUDs). Complaints began emerging in mid-January, with BMW owners being the first to report the glitch. Similar reports later came from Audi drivers and other brands.

The problem involves missing turn-by-turn directions from Google Maps and Waze on the HUD. In some cases, navigation disappears from the digital instrument cluster as well, though the route still shows correctly on the central multimedia screen.

Interestingly, the error behaves differently depending on the vehicle. For some users, Waze continues to work while Google Maps completely loses its projection integration. Other navigation apps like HERE function normally for some drivers.

Standard troubleshooting steps—clearing caches, deleting data, reinstalling, or rolling back Android Auto versions—haven't resolved the issue. Some users report temporary success by reverting to an older Google Maps version (pre-version 26), but this isn't a universal fix. A Google representative confirmed that the development team has been notified and is working on a solution.

No timeline has been given for when a patch might arrive. Such glitches highlight how dependent modern vehicles have become on software. When navigation disappears from the HUD, it's more than just an inconvenience—it becomes a safety concern. Now, everything depends on how quickly Google can release an update.
