Land Rover Defender Sport electric SUV: specs, features, and launch details

Land Rover's new Defender Sport is a compact electric SUV on the EMA platform, with 480-520 km range, off-road capability, and a 2027 launch. Learn about its design and features.

Land Rover is finalizing development of the new Defender Sport, a compact electric SUV that will become the entry-level model in the lineup, replacing the Discovery Sport. Built on the new EMA platform designed exclusively for electric drive, it is set to launch in early 2027.

Based on prototypes, the Defender Sport retains the iconic boxy shape but features slimmer headlights, a redesigned front end, and a shorter rear overhang. Styling options are expected to range from rugged with protective plastic trim to more urban versions in body color. The tailgate will open sideways, reminiscent of the classic Defender.

The EMA platform includes a 70–90 kWh battery and dual-motor all-wheel drive. Projected range is around 480–520 km. Off-road capability remains intact with all-wheel drive, Terrain Response, and precise torque vectoring at each wheel thanks to the electric architecture.

The interior will become more digital but keep the rugged, functional Defender style. A seven-seat version is not planned, though a flat floor between the front seats is under consideration.

The introduction of the Defender Sport aligns with JLR's new strategy: instead of the versatile Discovery line, the focus shifts to strengthening the Defender brand as a standalone family of multiple models. This approach mirrors Jeep's logic, where one recognizable design is adapted across different sizes. For buyers, this electric format could give the Defender Sport a key advantage—precise traction control off-road, which stands out against its main EV rival, the Jeep Recon.
