Ferrari's new motorized luggage mounting system enhances ownership experience
Ferrari patents a motorized luggage mounting system for front-engine models like Purosangue, designed to secure cargo and elevate the premium brand experience.
Ferrari is expanding beyond just cars, developing a complete ecosystem of accessories. A patent for a motorized luggage mounting system has been discovered in the USPTO database. Designed for front-engine models with rear seating compartments like the Purosangue or 12Cilindri, this system aims to enhance the ownership experience.
The design features an electric crossbar and a specialized coupling mechanism. A bag locks into the mounting interface, then the system retracts it into the space behind the seats and automatically secures it. This prevents cargo from shifting during spirited driving—a priority for any Ferrari.
An alternative loading method involves placing luggage through an open door with the seatback folded down. The electric drive then returns the seat to its original position, effectively clamping the bag in place. Ferrari notes that lifting heavy bags over a partition is both tiring and inconsistent with the brand's premium image. The system will likely require proprietary mounting standards, further tying customers to official accessories.
For years, Ferrari has generated revenue not only from vehicles but also from lifestyle products, ranging from apparel to exclusive luggage. This new patent aligns with that strategy of monetizing brand status. While such solutions might seem excessive for the mass market, for Ferrari they represent part of the brand's philosophy. Here, even luggage becomes an engineering statement and a marker of premium positioning.
