Volkswagen intends to reclaim leadership in the world’s largest car market, China. After a difficult first step with its initial electric cars, the German automaker is pivoting to a collaboration with Chinese manufacturer Xpeng, and one of the earliest results will be a new electric model.

Judging by spy shots and renders from Sugar Design, the sedan will be based on the Xpeng P7 platform yet wear Volkswagen’s own design language. At roughly five meters long, it features split LED headlights, a black front panel and an illuminated badge — a clear push toward a bolder look than the familiar ID models, giving the car more visual character.

The partnership with Xpeng also includes access to the Chinese brand’s autonomous driving system, though every co-developed model will remain exclusive to the Chinese market. European buyers will not get this Volkswagen, even if the experience and technology from the project are expected to influence future ID models. The China-first focus underscores where the brand most needs to regain momentum.

The electric sedan will be built on a new modular architecture designed for both pure electric and hybrid versions. Depending on configuration, output is expected to reach up to 586 hp, with a driving range of up to 820 km on the Chinese CLTC cycle. On paper, these figures look convincing.

Cooperation with Xpeng is meant to help Volkswagen regain its footing in China, where the brand has ceded ground to local players in the race to electrify. The new sedan stands as a marker of VW’s refreshed strategy and the start of a new era for the marque in the Asian market.
