Mercedes Little G electric SUV: compact G-Class with off-road capability
Preview the Mercedes Little G electric SUV, a compact version of the G-Class launching in 2027. It retains iconic design with new electric tech and off-road features.
Mercedes has taken the final prototypes of the Little G—the upcoming compact version of the G-Class—to its northern testing grounds. Despite its smaller dimensions, the vehicle retains the iconic G-Class traits: an angular body, three-window side graphics, and an externally mounted spare wheel.
The test vehicle is electric, with a large battery pack visible beneath the body and the spare wheel niche repurposed to store charging cables. A key difference from the larger G-Class is its completely new architecture.
According to former technical director Markus Schäfer, the platform was developed from scratch with a "mini-frame" construction to preserve off-road capability. Most body panels and exterior elements are unique to this model. The design features a new DRL signature in a semi-circular shape and roof rails that emphasize its lifestyle orientation.
The Little G is scheduled for launch in 2027. It will compete with the future Land Rover Defender Sport, helping to define the segment of compact premium SUVs. For the 2026 auto market, this move underscores that even icons like the G-Class are adapting to electrification while maintaining their recognizable identity.
Mercedes is carefully expanding the G-Class family without diluting its legendary status. If the Little G retains its off-road character and offers modern electric technology, it could become the best-selling "Geländewagen" in history.
