Light fences guide animals safely across roads in the Netherlands
Testing light fences in the Netherlands uses laser lines to protect wildlife from traffic. This technology reduces collisions by guiding animals to safe crossings without physical barriers.
In the Netherlands, testing has begun on what are being called "light fences" to protect wild animals from road traffic. These consist of thin laser lines projected along roadsides that animals perceive visually as actual barriers.
Unlike metal or concrete structures, these glowing markers do not block the natural environment. Their purpose is to gently guide deer and other animals toward specially equipped safe road crossings. According to the project initiators, this should reduce the risk of collisions with vehicles.
The technology creates no physical barrier and does not disrupt migration routes. The light lines serve as a visual boundary that cannot be touched but is perceived as an obstacle.
The idea's creators emphasize that the project aims to preserve lives—both animal and human—while maintaining the natural balance. Testing is taking place on road sections where the problem of wild animals entering traffic lanes is particularly acute. The project is seen as an example of applying technology for safer coexistence between infrastructure and wildlife.
