Volkswagen Multivan Camper: a factory base for custom campers

Volkswagen introduces the Multivan Camper, a factory base for creating custom campers with a pop-up roof, starting from £43,900. Explore engine options and savings vs. ready-made models.

Volkswagen is expanding its Multivan lineup with a new Camper variant—a factory base for creating custom campers. The model is based on the long-wheelbase version of the Multivan and comes in a nearly empty configuration, so tuners won't have to remove unnecessary elements. Inside, only the two front seats remain, both with swivel mechanisms, forming the foundation for the future living area.

The main advantage is the standard mechanical pop-up roof with proper factory finishing, which significantly simplifies the camper preparation process. The cabin floor is left uncovered, and the rear section is completely free for layout planning. Access through two sliding doors and the large tailgate is preserved.

Engine options include a 2.0 TDI with 148 horsepower, DSG, and front-wheel drive, or an eHybrid with 237 horsepower and the 4Motion system. Prices start from £43,900, which after taxes amounts to £52,680. The hybrid version costs from £60,870 including VAT.

Compared to ready-made California models, where prices start from £64,417, the Multivan Camper offers room for savings or more personalized layouts. However, buyers must go through a second certification stage, as the vehicle is supplied with an "incomplete chassis" status.

In practice, this means VW aims to shift the conversion market from the new Transporter, built on a Ford base, to its own Multivan platform. Now the question is whether craftsmen and enthusiasts are ready to embrace this strategy.
