Australian car sales dominated by key models from Ford, Hyundai, and others

New data shows Ford, Hyundai, Kia, and Mazda depend on 1-3 models for over 50% of sales in Australia. Learn which vehicles drive their success.

In Australia, some of the top-selling car brands rely heavily on just one or two successful models. A new data analysis reveals that four out of the five most popular automotive brands in the country, including Ford and Hyundai, depend significantly on a small selection of their lineup. For these brands, over 50% of total sales come from just a few models.

According to the latest VFACTS data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, Ford's sales last month were dominated by a single vehicle. In January 2026, the Ford Ranger accounted for more than 54% of the brand's total sales volume.

Hyundai saw two models—the Kona and Tucson—carry the bulk of its sales, together making up 61%. For Kia and Mazda, three out of their 16 models contributed between 50% and 60% of January sales. Kia's top performer was the Carnival, representing about 20% of total brand sales, while Mazda's CX-5 accounted for nearly 30%.

Despite this concentration of sales, automakers continue to produce a wide range of vehicles to target various consumer segments. This strategy helps showcase technological innovations, meet diverse customer needs, and maintain the image of a dynamic, forward-moving brand.
