2027 GMC Sierra 1500 to feature electronic transmission shifter

The 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 will be part of General Motors' new generation of full-size pickups. Alongside its corporate twin, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, the truck will receive noticeable design and cabin architecture changes. Now, another significant update has emerged: the transmission.

According to available information, the 2027 Sierra will switch to a new electronically controlled transmission with a column-mounted shifter. This system is already used on several GMC models, including the Yukon, Sierra EV, Acadia, and Terrain. It will replace the current setup, which varies depending on the cabin configuration.

The current-generation Sierra 1500 uses two transmission control options: versions with a front bench seat have a classic column shifter, while trims with bucket seats feature an electronic selector on the center console. Standardizing this will simplify assembly and optimize interior layout.

The freed-up space on the center console could be used for additional storage compartments or new controls. For a pickup, where ergonomics and practicality are key, this is an important improvement. The new-generation GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado are expected to debut later this year. Beyond the updated transmission, the models will get redesigned exterior and interior styling.

Preliminary reports suggest the next-generation Silverado will be equipped with a Gen 6 Small Block V8 engine. Externally, the Sierra will retain its recognizable proportions, but the design will move closer to GM's full-size SUVs—with a more substantial front end and new lighting elements.

Shifting to an electronic selector is a logical move. It's not just a trend but a way to make the cabin more modern and functional. The crucial point is that the system must maintain the reliability and intuitive operation that pickup drivers expect.
