China's proposed ban on unconventional steering wheels and safety updates
China is updating safety standards to potentially ban Tesla-style steering wheels like yokes by 2027, aiming to reduce driver injuries from steering mechanisms and improve EV safety.
China is considering a ban on unconventional steering wheel designs, including yokes and "half-wheels," which gained popularity through Tesla. The regulator is updating the national safety standard for driver protection in collisions because the current version does not account for modern steering forms and electric vehicle features.
Statistics show that up to 46% of driver injuries are caused by the steering mechanism. The revised standard mandates impact tests on the wheel rim at ten points, a requirement technically impossible for yokes, effectively making them candidates for a full ban. Additionally, rules against hard protruding elements are being tightened, as such parts increase injury risks and can interfere with airbag deployment.
The legislative changes will take effect on January 1, 2027. All vehicles produced after that date must comply with the updated norms, with a 13-month transition period for already certified models. This could impact electric cars with design elements like Tesla's, where unconventional steering wheels have become part of the brand's image.
Previously, China restricted another trendy feature—electric door handles—deemed unsafe in certain scenarios.
