Toyota Highlander BEV electric SUV details and launch
Toyota expands its EV lineup with the Highlander BEV, a large SUV offering up to 510 km range, fast charging, and sales starting in late 2026 in North America.
Toyota is expanding its electrification strategy in North America with the introduction of the all-electric Highlander. The new Highlander BEV debuted in California and will become the brand's fourth electric model in the U.S. market. Sales are set to begin in late 2026.
The model retains the format of a large three-row SUV, a body style that has sold over 3.6 million units since 2001. The electric version is built on the TNGA-K platform and will be manufactured in Kentucky. Buyers will have two battery options: a 76.96 kWh unit offering up to 460 km of range, and a 95.82 kWh battery targeting up to 510 km in the AWD version. The higher-end variant develops 338 horsepower, while the base version offers 221 horsepower.
Toyota claims support for fast charging, reaching 80 percent in under 30 minutes in cold weather thanks to a battery pre-heating function. Inside, there's a new architecture with a 14-inch multimedia screen, a 12.3-inch digital panel, and a seven-seat 2-3-2 layout or a six-seat configuration with captain's chairs.
Against a backdrop of cooling interest in large electric cars, Toyota is betting on the proven Highlander name. In the segment, the newcomer will compete with the Hyundai Ioniq 9, Kia EV9, and Volvo EX90. For buyers, this matters because success will likely hinge on pricing: spaciousness and brand recognition are strong points, but the market demands a sensible balance between size and efficiency.
