Porsche switches to Samsung SDI batteries for electric Macan in South Korea
Porsche will adopt Samsung SDI battery cells in all electric vehicles for South Korea starting 2026, affecting the Macan Electric. Learn about the market-driven change and specifications.
Porsche plans to start using Samsung SDI battery cells in all electric vehicles sold in South Korea from the 2026 model year, according to a report by The Chosun Daily. This change will affect the electric Macan, which previously featured batteries from Chinese supplier CATL.
Currently, the Taycan and the upcoming Cayenne Electric for the Korean market already use LG Energy Solution cells, making the Macan Electric the only model switching suppliers. The vehicle is produced at Porsche's Leipzig plant, with CATL batteries previously supplied from the company's facility in Thuringia, Germany.
The decision is linked to market specifics in South Korea. Buyers there pay close attention to battery origins, and after a Mercedes EQE electric car fire in 2024, authorities required automakers to disclose battery supplier information.
Porsche has not yet provided official comments. Technical specifications for the Macan Electric with Samsung SDI batteries and supply chain details remain undisclosed.
The current Macan Electric uses a 100 kWh battery (95 kWh usable) with NMC811 cells from CATL. It offers a WLTP range of up to 641 km for the rear-wheel-drive version and 591 km for the Macan Turbo. Fast charging at up to 270 kW allows a charge from 10% to 80% in 21 minutes.
