BYD Atto 2 electric crossover European production in Hungary

BYD plans European production of the Atto 2 electric crossover in Hungary to avoid EU tariffs, potentially lowering prices and boosting competitiveness in the EV market.

Chinese automaker BYD is planning to start European production of its Atto 2 electric crossover. According to Automotive News, the model for the European market will be assembled in Hungary at a BYD factory, which is also slated to produce the more compact Dolphin Surf, as previously reported by 32CARS.

Currently, the BYD Atto 2 for Europe is imported from China and starts at €36,690. The model is barely cheaper than European-built competitors like the Peugeot e-2008, Volvo EX30, or Opel Mokka Electric. One reason for the high price is the EU's import tariff on Chinese electric vehicles, which reaches 27 percent.

Moving production to Europe would allow BYD to avoid this surcharge, potentially lowering the model's price by several thousand euros and boosting its competitiveness. In some countries, the Atto 2 is also offered as a plug-in hybrid, but in Europe, the crossover is available exclusively as a fully electric vehicle.

Exact timing for the start of Atto 2 production in Hungary has not yet been revealed. Meanwhile, BYD has confirmed plans to further expand its European presence and is considering a third factory launch. The company already has production facilities in Hungary and Turkey.

The introduction of a European-built Atto 2 could strengthen BYD's position in the 2026 new car segment and intensify price competition among compact electric crossovers.
