Over the past 25 years, the UK car market has been transformed, yet the Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus remain out in front. According to SMMT, these models are the country’s most common: more than 2.1 million and 2 million sold, respectively. The Fiesta—long a fixture of Britain’s roads—left the market only recently, and its exit became news of national significance.

The other standard-bearer is the Ford Focus, a late-’90s gamble that more than paid off, becoming one of the best cars in the brand’s history. In third place sits the Vauxhall Corsa with almost 1.84 million units—a car familiar to virtually every British driver.

They’re followed by the Vauxhall Astra (1.46 million) and the Volkswagen Golf (1.45 million), hatchbacks that for decades have set the benchmark for practicality and quality.

The standout finding in the ranking is the Nissan Qashqai, the only crossover on the list, with 707,000 sold. It shows just how successful the experiment by Nissan’s British engineers proved to be, effectively creating a new segment of city-focused SUVs.

Also among the leaders are the Renault Megane and Clio, both staying near the top thanks to their design and balance, the Volkswagen Polo with its reliability, and the Peugeot 206, a phenomenon of the early 2000s.

A quarter of a century on, the sales picture reflects not only buyers’ tastes but also how Britons shifted from compact hatchbacks to versatile crossovers—the emblem of a new automotive era.
