Stellantis faces electric vehicle production delays from battery problems

Stellantis experiences delays in EV production for Peugeot models due to ACC battery supply issues, impacting European electrification strategy and market competition.

Stellantis is facing significant delays in electric vehicle production due to issues at one of its key battery suppliers. According to Bloomberg, French battery manufacturer Automotive Cells Co. is struggling to produce the long-range batteries needed for the new Peugeot 3008 and 5008 models.

These batteries are crucial for delivering the flagship Stellantis models' promised performance, but actual production volumes are far below target. The company is producing around 1,000 battery packs per month instead of planned levels, forcing delivery start dates to be pushed back by up to eight months. This delay puts pressure on Stellantis's production plans and its European electrification strategy.

ACC acknowledges the challenging timeline, with the company's general secretary stating that the ramp-up is difficult but they are doing everything possible to serve customers.

For Stellantis, this situation is particularly problematic given the recent decision to discontinue hybrid versions of the Jeep Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, and Chrysler Pacifica in the U.S. due to weaker-than-expected demand. Now, the battery production bottleneck could disrupt the pace of Europe's transition to electric vehicles, making the market even more competitive.
