GM brake booster disengagement in Sierra and Silverado trucks
Learn about the brake booster problem in 2022-2024 GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado models, including causes, symptoms, and GM's official fix through a software update.
Owners of 2022-2024 GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado models are facing a serious and alarming issue: after an auto-stop and subsequent restart, the brake booster system suddenly disengages. A series of warnings light up on the instrument panel, the pedal becomes stiff, and braking distance increases. GM has officially acknowledged the problem, describing it in a recent NHTSA bulletin.
The root cause is electronic, not mechanical. During engine restart, a brief voltage drop occurs. If it falls below a threshold value, the K160 Brake System Control module registers a fault and takes a safety-first approach—it disables the booster. Diagnostics then show codes P0562 and P0606, indicating insufficient power to the module.
The manufacturer has provided dealers with a clear procedure. The first step is to check the 12-volt battery, as a weak battery can exacerbate voltage fluctuations. Next, the K160 module's software should be updated to reduce its sensitivity to brief voltage dips during auto-stop events.
GM emphasizes that the bulletin only applies to cases where the failure occurs immediately after engine restart. If the booster disengages while driving or during stable engine operation, diagnostics follow a different path—checking wiring, grounds, and the alternator.
Sierra and Silverado owners experiencing this symptom are advised to contact an authorized service center promptly. The issue is resolved through a software update, which is part of the standard update protocol.
