Rivian R2 pre-series production begins, targeting U.S. and Europe

Rivian launches pre-series production of the R2 SUV, its first model for Europe, with deliveries starting this year in the U.S. and a price around $45,000.

American company Rivian has taken a pivotal step in its evolution by launching pre-series production of the R2 model—the most significant vehicle in the brand's history and its first specifically aimed at the European market.

Key Development

The first validation units of the Rivian R2 are already rolling off the assembly line at the plant in Normal, Illinois. This stage allows for fine-tuning production processes and preparing the model for mass manufacturing. According to company CEO RJ Scaringe, initial customer deliveries in the U.S. will begin this year, with the European market slated as the next phase of expansion.

Technical and Market Details

The Rivian R2 falls into the D-SUV segment and, at roughly 4.73 meters in length, is larger than the Volkswagen ID.4. For the U.S. market, the starting price is announced at around $45,000, highlighting the brand's push into a more mainstream segment. It is expected to offer an EPA-rated range exceeding 550 kilometers, with powerful versions capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, making the R2 competitive on paper.

Market Impact and Implications

A crucial factor in the project's success has been the partnership with Volkswagen. The German conglomerate has invested in Rivian and gained access to its electric platforms and software solutions, which will also be utilized in future VW models. For Rivian, this represents not only financial backing but also a validation of its technological readiness ahead of its European launch.
